Help Girl Scouts Help Preemies

We would like to invite you to join us in helping our local Girl Scout troop 1640 knit and/or crochet hats for preemie babies. All donations will be sent to Medical Teams International (MTI) and given to babies in need. The hats will be collected monthly until April 4, 2010. For more information please contact the shop. Donation Requirements:

  • No wool
  • Machine washable
  • Soft yarn (test it on the inside of your forearm to make sure that it is not scratchy)
  • Finer weight (no chunky yarn)
  • Lots of stretch, finished hat should fit on an orange or grapefruit

Patterns:

Easy Knitted Preemie Hat:

Materials:

  • Size 7 or 8 needles
  • 1 ball of DK or Worsted weight yarn

Directions:

  • Cast on 34 stitches.
  • Work in garter stitch for 6 rows (about 3 ridges).
  • Change to stockinette stitch (knit a row, purl a row). Continue until hat measures 4½ inches from cast on edge.
  • One right side row (knit side) knit 2 together across row.

Finishing:

  • Cut yarn tail about 18 inches long and thread through darning needle. Pull yarn through remaining stitches and stitch to secure. Using mattress stitch, sew side seam of hat. Weave in all ends. Decorate top with pom pom, tassel or spirals if desired.

Easy Crocheted Preemie Hat:

Materials:

  • Size H Crochet Hook
  • 1 ball of DK or Worsted weight yarn

Directions:

  • Chain 4 stitches. Join with a slip stitch into first stitch of chain.
  • 14 DC into same stitch (15 DC total). Join with slip stitch and chain 3.
  • DC into same stitch and 2 DC into each stitch. Join and chain 3.
  • DC into same stitch and next. 2 DC in next stitch. Alternate DC and 2 DC until last stitch. Join. Chain 3.
  • DC in each stitch. Join and chain 3. Continue in pattern until hat measures about 4-4½ inches from top.

Finishing:

  • If desired, last row can be finished with a round of SC in same or contrasting color. If a folded brim is desired, continue for 2-3 more rounds. Fasten off and weave in loose ends.
