To make this hat a little more versatile, block the finished Sky Bound hat in the same fashion as a Tam or Beret.
Soak hat in warm water with a bit of wool wash such as Eucalan. Remove hat from water and gently squeeze out excess water. Place hat in a bath towel and roll up. Press firmly to remove all remaining water from hat. Hat will be slightly damp.
With a 9” dinner plate, insert plate into inner side of hat and gently center the plate so that the opening at the brim will be centered over one side of the plate. If desired, with a yarn needle and extra yarn, thread yarn on needle through bottom edge of brim and gently pull the yarn to help keep the brim opening in shape and secure. Once hat is dry, place jauntily on head and enjoy!
Ruched & Flowered Style
For a sweet feminine look, the Sky Bound hat can be ruched and embellished for added style.
To start, block and dry hat the same as Slouchy Style.
With a 12” length of same yarn used for hat and a yarn needle, thread yarn onto needle. Choose one of the vertical “seams” of the hat and insert needle at start of “seam” right above brim. Alternating back and forth over rows, thread yarn upwards for 6 inches. Then, going back in the opposite direction, thread yarn back toward starting point. Remove needle and leave a tail for both the starting and ending points. Pull gently on both tails to create the ruching making it as loose or tight as desired. Tie both ends together, fasten off and weave in ends.
Add desired embellishment at the base of the ruching.
For a quick and simple addition, use this crochet pattern to make a cute flower. Use the leftover self-striping yarn used for the hat.
Simple Crochet Flower
Chain 5. Sl st into beginning chain to form ring.
Ch1, sc10 st into ring. Sl st into first sc.
Ch1, in next sc work the following, *(hdc1, dc1, trc1, dc1, hdc1), sl st in next sc*, rep from * to * to end of round.
Cut yarn leaving a 6 inch tail, pull tail through final loop. Weave tail through the back side of flower following the ring stitches until tail is opposite the beginning chain tail. Use both tails to secure flower to bottom of ruching on hat. Fasten and weave in ends.
If desired, add a button to the center the hat for added decoration.
